Barrier-free travel by bus and train

All important information about unrestricted travel on the VRS.

You travel free of charge, of course

As the holder of a disabled person's ID card plus a valid token - which you can obtain from the Versorgungsamt - you can use all buses and trains in the VRS fare zone free of charge.

Stepless boarding and alighting

Many buses can be lowered at stops using tilting technology. Alternatively, a ramp allows you to get on and off the bus without steps. Depending on the vehicle type, if you press the button with the wheelchair (baby carriage) symbol, the bus driver can fold out the ramp for boarding. The folding ramp on low-floor buses can also be operated by accompanying persons or other passengers.

Your seat is guaranteed

You will find specially marked seats for the disabled on buses and trains near the entrances and exits. There are also designated spaces for wheelchair users in the entrance areas.

Barrier-free stops

General tips for a good ride

Please allow enough time

It is best to get a VRS ticket before you start your journey, e.g. as a cell phone ticket via the VRS app or at the many advance booking offices of the transport companies in the VRS. A time buffer in your luggage makes changing trains much more relaxed for you.

Your hand signal will help you

If you need help getting on the bus, please signal this to the bus driver as you approach the bus stop. You are guaranteed help!

Getting on and off safely with a wheelchair

If you follow the following tips, boarding the bus will work best:

  • Please stand at the bus stop where you are clearly visible to the bus or train driver.
  • Always keep a safe distance of one meter from the kerb or the road.
  • You can use the ramp markings on the side to guide your wheelchair wheels safely onto the bus.

This makes it much easier to get off the bus:

Please press the signal button with the wheelchair symbol in good time - preferably immediately after the bus stop announcement. The driver will then recognize your stop request and know that you may need help.
